When she’s not packing out Stage and Radio, Kerry McColgan is busy running Mixing Mate’s other venture, a record label. For the label’s second release Mixing Mates has brought in Tyvion Valentine. A Dublin-based multi-instrumentalist whose deep knowledge of music and arrangement shines through on this release.

The EP, Who Ever Said, draws on Tyvion’s love of garage and incorporates influences from breaks, and house to create a well-rounded set of tracks.

Wobbly, scatty, & undulating ‘Who Ever Said’ is the perfect antidote to tired, hands-in-the-air peak time music (Not that there’s anything wrong with that it’s just is nice to have a break sometime).

With garage vibes throughout, punctuated with restrained vocals, and underpinned by a wobbly synth line, the track takes a slight left turn halfway in with a round arpeggiated melody and increased drum work. Chopped vocals add texture and risers poke through to tie the whole thing together.

This is entirely the type of music you’d hear at 6am after a house party, one soldier is still dancing in the corner of your living room as the light starts to stream through the window. Ave it.

‘More’ leans more towards the breaks aesthetic, sporadic synths and haunting vocals take the listener down a rabbit hole of sounds. Although the percussion is a little more on the frantic side the overall sound of the track is serene, contemplative, and cool.
