Hello Mydir & Bushman, thanks so much for coming on the AMF blog and putting a mix together for us. I always like to start my interviews by getting guests to tell us a little about themselves. Are you able to share the story of Nyumba, how you both came together to found the event and tell us a bit about your own DJ journeys.

Nyumba came to life through a shared passion for Afro House and a desire to create something deeper than just another club night. The word “Nyumba” means “House” in Swahili, and that felt like the perfect name, not only because of the music we love, but because we wanted to build a space that felt like home. A place where people could dance freely, meet new faces, and feel genuinely connected.

As DJs, we’ve each walked our path — from early influences and late-night crate digging, to spinning at intimate gatherings and bigger stages. Over time, we found ourselves drawn to the same energy: Afro House. Its rhythm, its roots, its power to bring people together. When we finally linked up, the chemistry was instant. We knew we had something to share, and that became the foundation for Nyumba.

We built this event not around hype, but around intention — keeping the focus on the music, the movement, and the people in the room. And now, with the Nyumba Radio Show, we’ve extended that feeling into a platform that celebrates the artists and friends who’ve joined our journey. It’s a way to spotlight like-minded selectors and creatives who help shape this sound and keep the culture evolving.

Nyumba isn’t just a party. It’s a gathering. A movement. A home for those who feel the music the way we do. And we’re just getting started.

Nyumba is a night for people who love Afro and Melodic house music. What is it about those genres you really love?

With Afro House, it’s the roots, the rhythmic soul. It’s tribal, it’s spiritual. The percussion feels ancient but timeless, like it’s tapping into something older than all of us. Every drum hit carries cultural weight, and when layered with rich vocals, chants, or traditional instruments, it becomes storytelling through sound. It moves both body and spirit, like a ritual on the dancefloor.

Melodic House, on the other hand, is like emotion sculpted in sound. It’s cinematic, often dreamy, with lush harmonies and long, evolving builds that feel like you’re floating through space or memory. The melodies have this way of pulling at the heart, gentle but powerful. It’s reflective and uplifting all at once.

But the magic happens when the two merge. Afro rhythms are grounded in the earth, and melodic layers reach for the sky. It’s like the ancestors’ heartbeat meets the stars’ soundtrack. It’s soulful, sophisticated, and spiritual all in one.

Moving on to your mix, can you tell us a bit about how you put it together? Was it a joint effort or did one of you record it for AMF? When you’re putting a mix together or playing a set, what's most important for you? Is it curating a vibe, taking people on a journey or creating those hands-in-the-air moments? Or all 3?

I curated this mix (MYDIR) with the intention of showcasing some of my own productions, including a forthcoming track titled Aiyanna, set for release this summer on Bushman’s label, WeAreiDyll Records. I’ve also included Aranga, which stands as my most significant release to date.

For myself, whether I’m crafting a mix or performing live, it’s always about storytelling—creating a journey where each track blends seamlessly into the next, guiding the listener through a cohesive and emotive experience.

I (Bushman) thrive when it comes to extended sets, which is why when we do bring guests, we don’t power the line up with too many people. We want the people to be taken on a journey and not worry about trying to make the crowd throw their hands in the air, we haven’t thrown an event where the crowd hasn’t thrown their hands, and that’s just from the music!… it’s spiritual

Are there any standout tracks in the mix you wouldn’t mind sharing with us? Any special tunes you’re really loving at the moment or ones that never leave your record bag?

Eyama – Indlu Emnyama, Korie Minors Idd Aziz Jabz Dimitri – Kwame, Penhilburg – The Execution, Stones & Bones, Ruvimbo, Gino Brown – Nzara, DJ Feevos, Precious James – Bavela Kude, Hypaphonik – Yng Blk & Gfted, Da Africa Deep – Aries, Nuzu Deep – I Am One Album

Lastly, what’s on the horizon for Nyumba? Your next event is on the 26th. Can you tell us a bit about that? Do you have any other gigs, radio shows or events you can tell us about.

The horizon for Nyumba is vast, it has many directions where it can go and can be taken incorporating meditation and wellness into our daytime events alongside collaborations with societies such as ‘Singles Nights’ to bring back the feeling of meeting people. We are also trying to develop a reach between the midlands and the north which is built around our Afro House family to develop the sound and offer the chance for new artists and DJs to get on board
