South London’s finest are heading up episode 17. Tram22 have been regulars in the capital for over three years playing at venues including the Prince of Wales, Off the Cuff & cafe101. Tram22 have thrown down an hour of their signature sounds sampling the best in warm, soulful, minimal house.

You’re down at Bankside Vaults this Friday (12th) playing alongside Kiasmos, Christian Löffler and many others. How excited are you about the event? Are Bankside Vaults your biggest venue to date?

We’re really excited for this Friday. I think our style should compliment the headline artists quite well. The promoters are expecting around 2000 people on the night so yes, it will be the biggest crowd we’ve played in front of and we can’t wait to get out there.

You’ve spent the summer months playing rooftop parties at the Prince of Wales in Brixton with the ‘ByDay By Night’ team. What’s it like playing a rooftop party? Is there any special prep that goes in to them sets?

The rooftop at Prince of Wales is a brilliant space. It’s relatively small so you feel like you are right amongst the crowd and generally people are in good spirits up there. We rarely over prepare these sort of sets because it’s important that you can be reactive, but the tracks we play tend to be a bit lighter.

PoW is a cool venue, do you have any spaces in South London that you’d recommend to check out?

The South London clubbing scene is really dominated by the household names like Phonox and Corsica Studios – both of which are fantastic clubs. Aside from them, Off The Cuff in Herne Hill is a cool space that we’ve played at a few times.

Do you think, as DJ’s in London, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to finding interesting spaces to throw events? Or is it completely the opposite?

There are obviously a huge number of promoters in London, often vying for the same space. However there are certainly venues to be found that might not immediately seem viable. I think a bit of ingenuity and innovation goes a long way, particularly for DJs and promoters who are starting out.

Let’s move on you your mix. How did you approach the hour. Do you tend to plan mixes like this or rock up to your turntables and feel it out as you go?

We always spend some time going through our track selection and structure. This hour is really a collection of tracks that we always have at hand as well as a few new bits we’ve been enjoying recently.

Are there any specific tracks on the mix you wouldn’t mind sharing with us?

Sure. There are a couple tracks on there from guys on the Fuse label like Archie Hamilton and Ben Rau. Both are a big inspiration to us in terms of the style of their music. On top of that there’s also a lovely progressive house number around halfway through entitled Womanizer by Peter Dildo. Heard this one a couple years ago on a recording from 2006 in Pacha, imagine the scenes.

Finishing up, do you have any other events in the pipeline you can tell us about?

We will be doing a bit more with ByDay ByNight in the run up to Christmas, and putting out a couple more mixes.

Check out Ausgang’s mix for more of the same.
