Episode 45 is a live NYE recording from Indigo Jung which he recorded during his set for Cosmic in Chorlton. Check our interview with Indigo Jung below 🙂
What does your studio setup look like and can you tell us a bit about your creative process for creating tracks?
I usually create the start of tracks just at home, I have a pair of Adam Audio monitors and the Yamaha Reface DX in my flat, but when the tracks are fully fleshed out to an extent creatively I will go over to SEM studios in Salford to hear them in a treated room. Darren Whitaker my engineer also has a studio there and I’ve started working back and forth with him to see how far we can take the mastering.
I suppose my track usually start with making a decent little drum pattern or loop that’s good enough for me to be able to listen to on repeat without getting bored.
Or quite often I will hear something that would be interesting to sample: whether it’s on the radio or browsing youtube or watching a documentary and I’ll make a note of it reminding me to do something with it when I have time. I love taking a sample of really old or slightly poor music and reimagining the artist’s melodies and arrangements for a dancefloor setting.
I really like using strange or obtuse sounds and sort of make it game with myself to how I can get it to fit with other instrumentation I feel like that’s the Indigo Jung ‘sound’. IDM type music and the Lo-Fi scene love doing this but quite often it ends up being sort of an artistic exercise for the person making it – I think dance music should be for the dancefloor so no matter how creative and strange the arrangement or sounds get I try to bring it back down to being something accessible.
Quite often the tracks that are fully developed are created from various alterations of different projects or ideas that found a structure.
You’re releasing an EP on Sprechen records in May. could you tell us a bit about the release? What can we expect and what has it been like working with Chris and the team?
Yeah, I’ve known Chris for over 4 years now, he got me one of my first gigs in Manchester. He’s always keen to offer advice on tracks he’s been in the game for a long time and knows his stuff with his experience in the Manchester dance scene. The Sprechen crew are all fantastic Night Giants, Gina Breeze, and TJ Lawton I’ve done quite a lot with. In terms of the Mean World EP, It’s a collection of tracks I’ve worked on all 2019. It quite a mix of soul, disco and techno. I’m excited to get it out there with Sprechen, hope everyone enjoys it! My favourite is the title track.
Tell us a bit about the mix. It’s a lovely mix of genres and tempos. Is this a normal style for you or have you put something a bit different together for AMF?
Big thanks to Desoda for hosting his Cosmic NYE party in Chorlton! Might feel like a while ago since writing this! This set was from 5:30ish in the morning so a little bit for people coming down and people who were still coming up – some dub, some percussive disco/ Bossanova and a lot of wavy electronica. I would say this is my normal style- a mix of tempos and genres since it was late the focus was darker twisted beats and uplifting ethereal grooves for the morning- but it was a fab night and lush start to 2020. It’s a new decade, this is the music of the roaring twenties just for All my Friends!
Are there any standout tracks in the mix you’d like to share with us?
I’ll shout out some of the smaller artists on this Luke Wackelkopf -Love at Frist Sight, Radu Guran- Mantocareala and my self-released ID Jung productions – Get up (Whitakers Master 4.0) and BYK (the closing track) along with jazz singer Natascha Coiffait – all killer artists all sick tracks! Also, just in terms of the dawn of the 2020’s I think Bileos- You Can Win is such a fantastic composition full of hope, groove, and movement I was so glad I played that too to start off the year.
What’s coming next for you. You’ve got an EP dropping in May but are there any other projects you’re working on you could tell us about?
I’ve mentioned Get up and BYK so I have to give a shout out to my good friend Sam Nizzle who I am doing music with along with producer Drowzee he’s a dancehall artist from Jamaica part of the Spragga Benz crew. He’s had quite a life in Jamaica, London and now Manchester.
We are currently experimenting with “liquid dancehall” if that’s a way to describe a genre? We’re shooting a music video with him in February for Over Rhythm records – should be great.
I’ve been working with Aytron Hood also on his new album Wildflower (or Waves depending on what title he chooses haha) and I’m eager to see how that pans out.
I would also like to give a shout out to Dan and Louie from Orderly Daughters they are fantastic compositional artists on piano and guitar – they are releasing one of their tracks on Over Rhythm with a Jung remix in late February.
