This month’s mix is from one half of Son of Banger’s, Guy Hornsby. Guy is a regular AMF collaborator (you can catch the podcast we recorded with him below). His mix is an eclectic bag of tracks that has everything from De La Soul to Crystal Water in it. Guy thoughts on the mix
Often for the radio shows and playing in clubs, I tend to stick to more ‘mixable’ tracks with a four-four angle as it flows and works for the dancefloor but it’s always more enjoyable to go completely off-piste. Bangers, after all, should be any genre you like.
I put this mix together in the best way that many of my favourite mixes happen: I took a track I loved – and they don’t come much better than Bobby Womack – and an idea of one that might follow, then hit go and just went wherever it took me. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Mixing tracks of 3-4 minutes can be pretty stressful, but it’s never boring, and when it comes off it’s a total joy.
Much as I miss playing or with other people, this is as close to that as I can get, and so many of my favourites are on this list, many of them in an order I’d never played before. Talking Heads into Price, Public Enemy into Daft Punk… Justice into Dizzee, so I hope that when people listen it’s as much of a surprise to them as it was to me at the time! It’s not perfect, but then what is? Enjoy!
