For his second 4 hour odyssey on the AMF blog Paul East has put together another smorgasbord of tune ranging from 80 – 120bpm.
He also shared some of his favourite tracks with. Catch my chat with him and listen to his recommendations below:
Hey Paul, thanks for coming back on the blog and putting together another stellar mix for us. As we interviewed you last time (Catch that mix and interview here) I though this time it’d be great if you could share some of your favourite tracks with us. Things you’re really digging at the moment and old classics that never get very far away from your bag.
Before we get into that though could you tell us a bit about this mix, how you’ve put it together and whether you’ve done anything new or different from your normal mixing approach?
So, this turned into quite a long one in the end! Having pretty much only ever played out with vinyl, it’s only recently I’ve started dabbling more in digital. Various reasons for getting modern, the pain in my shoulders being a big one, price, plus it’s so accessible through things like Bandcamp to find new stuff and get more money to the artists.
On top of that with reviewing stuff for TP I get sent quite a bit of new music now and that’s usually digital. I always want to share as much of it as possible, mostly through the radio shows I do – there’s so much I want to try and give as much of it the exposure it deserves as possible.
Anyway, so back to the mix, it’s a selection of some of the stuff I’ve enjoyed over the last year or so, finds and donations. So big thanks to all the DJs/producers/labels for this. Playing out, I’ve done quite a few long sets recently with records but not digital, so wanted to experiment a bit with that and try and build something over a longer time. It goes from fairly sedate to more front foot music, something for everyone in any circumstance.
Stick it on and get immersed. Anyway, hope people like it, consume whole or in manageable chunks – do what you feel. Enjoy!
Pauls Recommendations
Khartomb - Swahili Lullaby (Talking Drums Redub) [Before I Die]
Jason Boardman’s Before I Die label is basically a buy on site go to for quality releases. His ear is pretty much second to none (check the CTR Comp of Post-punk he did recently – one of four apparently!). As well as new music, he’s put out some older rediscoveries and the Khartomb stuff is one of those. Originally out in 1983, this track has been reworked by local heroes Talking Drums so ticking many many boxes and great, deep and dubby opener.
God Colony Feat. Roy - Loss is not Infinite
Some tracks just kind of stop you in your tracks and this is one of them. Perfectly capturing the hypocrisy and craziness of modern times with humour and emotion, one of my tracks of 2024 and the Christmas number one the world should have had.
Hugo - Field of Dreams (David Holmes Remix)
I’ve recently finished Lizzy Goodman’s book on New York ‘indie’ from the early 2000s. Apart from the big names that I was aware of there were a lot of things I’d missed at the time or just wasn’t aware of.
One of those being David Holmes’ presence on that scene at the birth of DFA. How accurate or true those stories are is for those involved to decide but what you can’t get away from is the just ongoing production masterpieces he’s continued to do over the years and this one is just another in a long line of superb remixes he’s done. Hugo are a new act to me and he takes their track into a proper scuzzy, filtered morass of chaos that sucks you in totally.
Payfone - Wild Butterfly
My first intro to Payfone was with the killer ‘Paradise’ on Golf Channel way back when. They’re not super prolific but always one to watch. I was lucky enough to chat to Phil last year and the convo on the album was very exciting, so glad to say it’s finally coming out, and ‘Wild Butterfly’ is a very worthy addition to the Payfone catalogue. Moving their sound forward and still keeping true to what they do best, down and dirty soul with killer guest vocals and hooks.
Manu Dibango - Soul Fiesta (Chateau Flight Remix)
This is a bit of a cheat, as I came across this one digging about online so is off a record. What can you say about Manu, invented disco? Yeah why not. Add to his mastery of rhythm and the deft touch of Chateau Flight and you’re in business. Deep dance music.
